This book is a work of fiction. The setting for the story is based on Bahamian tradition and folklore. The Christmas season is a time for big celebrations in the country of the Bahamas. The Johnnycake also called Johnny bread is one of the main side dishes that Bahamians eat for breakfast along with their choice of stew fish, stewed conch, boiled fish, chicken souse or sheep tongue souse. Rock ovens can be found throughout The Bahamas and were used when electricity in the Islands were non-existent. They are still used from time to time to bake delicious pastries and bread that can be devoured in less than one minute. This story is inspired by the gingerbread man fable. Johnnycake's short-lived life is like gingerbread’s life. He escapes from various pursuers until his eventual demise between the members of a homeless family. It is the Bahamian version of the story but with a twist. If you ever visit the islands of the Bahamas be sure to try our homemade johnnycake and part take in our festivities, food and culture. Prince Albert King Sr.
