Children who are not confident to go underwater must first learn that the water will not “damage” them. Splashing is uncomfortable for them and they wipe splashes away immediately, which gets in the way of good swimming. It is important to proceed cautiously to get them used to going underwater. The child should never be forced or pushed into the water as fear is a poor teacher. The aim is for them to overcome their fear and carry out the exercises voluntarily.
