Synopsis

The Power of Awareness was written to gather a deeper understanding of the 7-year Itch. It has been written as part of the Deeper Reflections series because it is needed just as much as the book for Early Recovery. Having gone through Steps Four and Five we find out much more about ourselves. We come to face to face with the ‘alcoholic’ and its tendencies. Moreover, we admit the selfish things we have done, the harm this has caused others and ourselves, and the deep resentments and fears we have regarding the past and future. The process has made us more self-aware. However, does having self-awareness actually transform our thinking, or does it hamper our progress because we are constantly trying to ‘become’ a better person. We are obsessed with ourselves in a different way. Self-improvement along with a new moral code keeps us preoccupied. We are always trying to ‘become’ something rather than be aware of ‘what it is' we are. For some of us, there's a deep inner conflict that pains us in a way that we cannot understand. Our sober life is a huge success and we have beautiful relationships with family, friends, and partners. But, there is a battle that consumes us and we know no peace because of it. When we try to explain to others what we feel they can only offer us Twelve-Step solutions. Where do we turn when we find ourselves in this position? It's not surprising we want to leave our Fellowship, but go where? There's never a need to leave. The power of awareness is within ourselves; relationship is fellowship. I hope this book speaks to the psyche in a way that alerts the mind of the power of attention and awareness of observation.
