Synopsis

New York—a city where wealth and poverty are eternal neighbors, where you can meet legions of wonderful people, but also those who will not be cried over after whom not a single tear will be shed, where the law of indifference and loneliness, unfortunately, still exist. Harameus Lehm, the novel’s protagonist, is a wealthy banker to whom a mysterious figure appears at night. He is not sure whether the apparition is an angel of death or a guardian angel. When dawn breaks, tormented by remorse, Harameus decides to confess. An eccentric bishop, who is a passionate computer game player, hears his confession. After a strenuous verbal battle at the confessional, the priest finally imposes a penance upon him: serving the poor and sharing his wealth with them—which he does not receive with enthusiasm at all. Will he be able to make atonement for his sins and give up his previous life? Will the human surrounding him turn out to be only a metaphysical illusion?
