On the night of the 20th of June 1631, the town of Baltimore, County Cork, was raided by the notorious Barbary Coast Pirate, Jan Janszoon van Haarlem. During the night, Janszoon and his band of brigands emptied the town of every man, woman and child, leaving it completely empty. The townsfolk suffered terribly at the hands of the Pirates but worse was to come for them after they landed in Algiers. Most of the captives were sold in the Slave Markets but some were held in the dungeons below the Bey’s Palace waiting to be ransomed. A mission was mounted by the infamous Edmund Cason to travel to Algiers and negotiate with Bey Akbar for the release of the citizens of Baltimore. The book follows the trials and tribulations of two young men who stow away aboard Cason’s ship bound for Algiers in an attempt to rescue their loved ones.
