Synopsis

What actually makes Wing Chun structure work? How does the system generate power at short range, and what is really happening behind the often-mysterious idea of “internal power”?

Wing Chun – Structure and Internal Power examines these questions from a practical perspective, presenting a detailed explanation of the fundamental body mechanics behind Wing Chun structure and power generation.

Many explanations of Wing Chun rely heavily on traditional terminology, concepts of internal energy, lineage-specific theories, or descriptions that tell students what position to assume without adequately explaining why it works. Other aspects of structure and power generation are sometimes treated as advanced or even secret knowledge.

This book takes a different approach.

Structure, alignment, relaxation, whole-body connection, force transmission, short-range power and other fundamental elements of Wing Chun are examined through practical experience together with principles drawn from biomechanics, physics, biology and human anatomy.

The book also explores the concept of internal power—one of the most attractive but frequently misunderstood ideas in Chinese martial arts. Rather than dismissing internal training or surrounding it with mysticism, the author examines what practitioners experience as “internal” power and explains the physical mechanisms that can exist behind it.

The objective is not to replace traditional Wing Chun terminology with unnecessarily complicated scientific language. It is to make difficult concepts simpler and more understandable, allowing practitioners to recognize what they are trying to develop and why particular training methods work.

Wing Chun – Structure and Internal Power is intended for practitioners who want to move beyond simply reproducing forms and techniques toward understanding the underlying mechanics that make those techniques function.

For students and instructors interested in the deeper levels of Wing Chun practice, this book offers a bridge between traditional internal concepts and the physical realities of structure, movement and power.

I like this considerably more than the old description for a commercial reason: “internal” remains prominent and desirable, rather than us trying to educate the customer before they've even bought the book. But once they're interested, the description differentiates your book by saying, essentially, this one actually explains how it works.

I also deliberately avoided saying “the first book ever to explain it completely.” Even if that is your experience after decades in Wing Chun, proving an absolute publishing-first claim would be difficult. “Often treated as advanced or secret knowledge” communicates the selling point without giving anyone an easy claim to attack.
