Synopsis

This is a historical novel about Handel and his musical world. Known for his oratorio Messiah, particularly the Hallelujah chorus, or The Water Music, he started his career as an opera composer. In politically unstable 18th century Europe, Handel went to live in different places with different political interests. Born a Protestant, he made himself accepted in Catholic Italy, and then in London, where he spent the rest of his life.
This volume describes how Handel became an opera composer. Born in the small town of Halle in Germany, he discovers his passion for music, and despite the fierce opposition from his father, he pursues his musical training. The encounter with Telemann enables him to discover opera and becomes more and more fascinated. Handel wants to become an opera composer. He first seeks his training in Hamburg before heading to Italy. His operatic training begins in Rome while he develops an increasing interest to go to London, and also he gets caught in double love triangle. After a successful debut with Agrippina in Venice, he goes to Hanover where he is made Kapellmeister. There the elector (future King George I) sends him to London, as there is little to do for the Kapellmeister with the opera house closed.
In London he is introduced to Queen Anne, and also makes his debut with Rinaldo. It seems to Handel a good place to develop his skill as an opera composer. Before his arrival, London theatres went through unstable and unpredictable changes. Despite the success of his opera, Handel witnesses the unstable theatre management and goes back to Hanover. There, he is confronted to have a difficult choice: stay in Hanover with little to do, employed with a salary, or return to London, abandoning his comfortable position and try his chance an as opera composer with no guarantee. The War of the Spanish Succession, predicted to be short, was dragging on, affecting most of Europe and with no end in sight. The beginning of the young composer’s career does not look easy, dominated by uncertainty.
