Synopsis

(Up-dated February 2023) Catherine ‘Kate’ Bush was born in Bexleyheath in Kent, England, on 30th July 1958. She was only 19 years old when her debut single Wuthering Heights went to no.1 in the UK. The single topped the chart for four weeks, and was the first chart topping single by a British female singer-songwriter with one of their own songs. The single also went to no.1 in Australia, Ireland, Italy and New Zealand.

Kate was the sole composer of all 13 tracks she recorded for her debut album, THE KICK INSIDE ~ and she continued to not only write, but produce as well, most of her subsequent albums.

Kate has been nominated for 13 Brit awards, including eight for Best British Female, and three Grammy Awards. Her unique and experimental musical style was recognised in 2002, when she was awarded an Ivor Novello Award for her Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and in the 2013 New Years Honours she was appointed a CBE, for her services to music.

For the purposes of this book, to qualify as a Top 40 hit, a single or album must have entered the Top 40 chart in at least one of the featured countries. The Top 40 hits are detailed chronologically, according to the date they first entered the chart in one or more of the featured countries. Each Top 40 single and album is illustrated and the catalogue numbers and release dates are detailed for the UK, followed by the chart runs in each country.

The main listings are followed by ‘The Almost Top 40 Singles’, which gives an honourable mention to singles that peaked between no.41-50 in one or more countries, but which failed to enter the Top 40 in any. There is also a points-based list of the Top 20 singles and Top 10 albums, plus a fascinating Trivia section, which looks at the most successful singles and albums and in each of the featured countries.
