Changes in our American higher education “system” have happened at times gradually and at other times with warp speed. For example, in the fall of 1980, there were 165 private for-profit degree granting institutions in the US. By 2014, this number had jumped to 1,457- an 800% increase. Given the many vulnerabilities in higher education today, one’s ability to obtain broad-based support for strategic decisions by leveraging historical facts is paramount. To this end, this crisp and concise book provides salient historical information and philosophical underpinnings of American higher education.

This primer, written by a strategic enrollment management (SEM) practitioner with over 25 years of experience, contains 180 historical facts and sources in addition to several Did You Know factoids. For example, did you know that the word "admission" is from Latin roots and can be translated as "toward the mission” or that on November 7,1959, more than 75,000 students took the first ACT test?

Major milestones were drawn from Thelin’s A History of American Higher Education; 2nd Edition., Bastedo et al.’s American Higher Education in the 21st Century. 4th Edition, Adam’s The History of College Affordability in the United Stated from Colonial Times to the Cold War, Selingo’s Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions, and Hossler & Bontrager’s, Handbook of Strategic Enrollment Management. Movements, or descriptions of eras, weren't included unless a specific Black Swan date was mentioned. An example of this would be the Kent State shooting; that was a Black Swan event, and was included. Finally, creative liberties were taken to slot milestones within the A to Z format selected for this book. To create balance, milestones were also spread out among the entire alphabet.

This abridged historical book, designed and edited by Dr. Christopher Tremblay, is intended to help readers understand the framework for higher education in the United States in a fun and enjoyable way. Readers are treated to a rich foreward written by one of the preeminent strategic enrollment management leaders in the country, Stanley E. Henderson. The hope is that by reading this book leaders will be equipped to identify fundamental questions about the nature of higher education and the transformation that has occurred since Harvard University was founded in 1636.
