Synopsis

JUSTice for the Health of It offers a holistic approach to cultivate a paradigm shift to advance the delivery of healthcare from transactional to transformational.

Your skin color should have zero impact on the quality of your health, yet it does. Black and Brown men have a higher chance of dying from a stroke than white men. 60% of Black and Brown adults are more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes, and Black and Brown mothers have three times the rate of infant and maternal mortality and two times the rate of maternal morbidity than white mothers. The harsh truth is that our health care system is littered with disparities, and 84,000 Black and Brown lives are lost each year due to them.

Health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, healthcare access, treatment outcomes, and the average life expectancy experienced by socially disadvantaged populations.

Health justice is not an “Us against Them” problem, but instead, it is our problem.

This book is divided into four parts. Through the sharing of personal experiences, storytelling, and a mix of clinical and lay language, each distinct section discusses the given social determinants and factors from a different vantage point. This will enable the reader to acquire a broader understanding of the scope and interdependence of impact on health of each of the discussed factors.

In JUSTice for the Health of It, Dr. LaTrice D. Snodgrass arms communities with vital information to build one’s knowledge base regarding societal factors impacting overall health status. She hopes to empower and engage the reader to encourage them to channel their efforts more effectively as a healthcare advocate for equity and the eradication of race-based health disparities.
