Synopsis

After leaving school the writer spent four years at sea as a Cadet and what he saw and heard in many parts of the world convinced him that war was inevitable and that the sea could become a dangerous place to be, so in 1938 he joined the Royal Air Force exchanging the deck of an oil tanker for, as he put it the comparative safety of the flight deck of a Wellington bomber.
Upon demobilisation he soon found that civilian life had little to offer and whilst he did not expect a peace time service to be quite as exciting he rejoined and was not disappointed in the life he and his family experienced.
In this narrative he describes his life and the very many and various positions he undertook and duties he undertook, Observer, Navigation Instructor, Intelligence Officer and Catering Officer. He also describes the life of an Air Force family from the day he joined to the day of his retirement thirty four years later.
