Amanda has succeeded beyond her wildest dreams careerwise but has left anyone who got in her way in the dust. She was a famous oceanographer and marine biologist, but in the 2050’s she finds herself in a condo “to die for” with wonderful, friendly people all around her. Instead of seeing that, she sees it as a place for old people just waiting to die. Amanda’s home is the water. The complex in which she lives has a lake, an observatory to watch rocket launches to the moon and Mars colonies, docbots, and robots for healthcare and food. It is in one of the Avant-garde green space villages, where most paved roads have been turned into green space, and travel is done via an air-powered rail system. Voice and digital communicators keep everything and everyone in touch with the press of a button. How lucky she is to be able to live here, her children tell her. She doesn’t agree.
Amanda’s life is chronicled here from the time she’s five years old. Her relationship with her mom and siblings was always rocky. Her dad always found a way to excuse Amanda’s actions, which was a blessing and a curse. She was always a self-absorbed, selfish person.
Amanda starts the letter as an attempt to explain herself to her daughter. But the influence of the people around her and the realization that maybe she has been the problem, ignite a desire to try to be a better person. Can she redeem herself to her family at this late stage? How does living in this place she thought was only a waiting room for death, change her, or does it? Can a leopard change its spots OR, is it never too late to change? You be the judge.
