Fun facts about the little auk
The little auk or dovekie (Alle alle) is a small Arctic sea bird, half the size of an Atlantic puffin. Sometimes called “penguins of the north” these stout little birds are black and white in colour with a short neck and stubby beak. They have tiny wings for flying and swimming underwater. Little auks fly with very fast whirring wing-beats, low over the sea and skilfully forage for food by swimming underwater. Little auk’s feed on a variety of crustaceans and small fish. They have large pouches under their beaks called ‘gular pouches’ where they store food to feed their young. Little auks live in large colonies on marine cliff-sides. Mating pairs nest in crevices or beneath large rocks. Usually laying just a single pale blue egg.
