Synopsis

Membertou, the great Mi’kmaq Sagamo lived in Atlantic Canada during Champlain’s first voyage to North America. What was it like living as a native at that time?
In Mi’kmaq Song you can experience it with Magena (Maggie) who back in time, is captured by the Mi’kmaq and then by the Penobscot. Live with her in the Mi’kmaq village at Port Royal.
What was it like growing up as a young Mi’kmaq when the North American continent was still unexplored, and the forests were wild and free. Follow, Abtatuk, a young Mi’kmaq, as he grows up in the early sixteen hundreds.
Woven into the story are many aspects of Mi’kmaq culture; oral history, legends, food, taboos, medicine... Most interesting are customs long lost; the courtships, the burial custom (the art of preserving the body practiced by the Mi’kmaq rivals that of the Egyptians).

Trees,
Bend with the wind
Bask in the sun
Give shelter
To everyone.

This is Maggie’s song, a song composed with the help of her Mi’kmaq grandmother, a song she sings whenever she needs inner strength. Over the years the song has meant different things to her. It has given her comfort, courage, and has helped her through a painful time in her life.
When Maggie travels back in time to the early 1600’s she’s surprised to hear that Panonias and Abtatuk, the two Mi’kmaq who have captured her, have a song which they too use in time of need.
Brought up, partly by her grandmother, Maggie has been taught many of the Mi’kmaq customs, legends, and beliefs. Living life in the early 1600’s is vastly different from hearing about it. Her respect and love for the Mi’kmaq culture grows as she experiences the old ways first hand.
Abtatuk, a young Mi’kmaq, is intrigued by Maggie who looks somewhat like his people but also different. Through him and his stories, the reader, learns about the vision quest, the burial rituals, the courtship customs, the relationship with the people at Port Royal.
