The villages of Tullibody and Cambus started as a small community in Scotland’s smallest county, Clackmannanshire. But Tullibody and its associated village, Cambus, are a lot more than that. In 1791 Tullibody and Cambus had less than 500 people between them. In 2016 the estimated population for the ‘settlement’ of Tullibody, Cambus and Glenochil was almost 10,000. How did that happen? What changed a rural hamlet into a modern, commuter community. Tullibody’s wider story is based upon its history and its geography - its site, its location, its environment, its resources and its relationship with its wider economy and community of Clackmannanshire and Scotland. Tullibody and Cambus form:An Ancient Community - reputed to be one of the oldest villages in Scotland;A Strategic Community - commanding the lowest bridge on the River Devon between Fife and Central Scotland; A Feudal Community - The barony of Tullibody has been owned by powerful landowners since its foundation - latterly, by the Abercrombies. A Religious Community - With early connections to St Serf and later to Cambuskenneth Abbey;A Farming Community - From earliest times to present-day making the most of its various soils; An Industrial Community - Using its natural resources and the Port of Cambus to create wealth;A Growing Community - Tullibody is of special interest because of the speed of its growth in the past 80 years. From a small rural village in the 1940s to a mining settlement in the 1950s to a commuter town in the 1990s, Tullibody has expanded rapidly. Planning constraints limit further growth. Now part of the wider Central Scotland commuter community, good mobile phone coverage and high speed broadband will further enhance their connections with the wider world.Through the medium of historic maps and documents, this book traces the story of this expansion from ‘Croft to Commuter Community’
