The Lost Homeland; The events in this book are located in eastern Europe between Poland, Ukraine and Russia. Here, in the early 1800’s, the Jews were living peacefully until the pogroms instigated by the ‘Black Hundred,’ devastated their communities. This organisation had members that were right wing and antisemitic. Due to these pogrom’s Jewish leaders both in Russia and Europe, organised a mass exodus of over two million people to America, Canada and South Africa. The exodus was organised by wealthy Jewish bankers in London, St Petersburg and Paris. These were notably Baron de Hirsch, Leopold Rothchild, Henry Bischoffsheim, and Baron Gunsberg.Today one of the banks that funded the rescue of the Russian Jews, named Bischoffsheim & Goldsmidt, has vanished into history. Baron de Hirsch was a member of the bank’s board. Baron de Hirsch spent the bank’s entire profits on this rescue effort. He was a wealthy German Jew with a vast fortune of over $300,000,000 at his disposal, an enormous sum in 19th century Europe. In today’s terms, this made him a billionaire. He paid over a billion dollars to the Jewish rescue, in today’s valuation. Baron de Hirsch is a forgotten figure in this history. He now rests in an abandoned crypt in a Paris graveyard.Jewish ship owner Albert Ballin, transported over two million people out of the ports of Hamburg and Bremen to America. Jewish organizations throughout Russia, eastern Europe and America assisted in the rescue. The operation was principally carried out through Jewish organizations, most notably the Jewish Temporary Shelter and the Jewish Colonization Association. The latter was founded by de Hirsch. In London, Jewish refugees were met by Hermann Landau, director of the Jewish Temporary Shelter. There they obtained medical help and were given funds and tickets to make the final journey to America, Canada, South America and South Africa. In addition to this, de Hirsch bought thousands of acres of farmland, factories and housing, to assist the two million people fleeing Russia. The modus operandi of this transmigration and the people involved has never been investigated before, in a full historical narrative. I also explore two other historical narratives that have not been fully examined to date. These are the massacre of the Jews of Podolsk in 1941, and the escape of the Jews from this region known as Podolia, to the Shanghai ghetto.*** The author undertook a journey to explore many Jewish archives in London, Paris, Berlin, Warsaw, Lviv, Vilnius, Riga, and Hamburg, to uncover this story. I travelled across Europe by train, on a journey of over four thousand miles in search of this lost history. It was a journey to explore many archives in the Jewish Museum London, British Museum, London; Paribas Archives, Paris; Ringelblum Archives, Warsaw; Jewish Museum, Berlin in the Jewish Archives, Vilnius; Central State Historical Archives, Lviv; Hamburg State Archives, and many more that are listed in the notes. I visited Kamenets Podolsk, where the Spielberg’s had once lived and where the terrible massacre had occurred. I also travelled to Lviv, Vilnius and Riga. These locations are in an area of the ‘Pale of Settlement’, that the Yale historian Timothy D. Snyder has retitled in his book, as the ‘Bloodlands’. One could also apply the term the killing fields. I found myself in these lost Jewish communities, in their archives, in their desecrated graveyards and synagogues. Here are the results of my findings. What I uncovered was a tragedy of extraordinary proportions, unimaginable and incomprehensible to the human mind. This book covers over four hundred years of lost Jewish history, and is structured in six parts, from 1600-2003. Covering the period from the pogroms to the Holocaust. It is a story of unimaginable horror, faith, love and hope.
