This book, about written English, and is intended as a user-friendly guide and activities workbook for pupils, throughout the secondary range, in order for them to practise and improve their literacy skills. It is ideal for students and their parents working together and for any home-schooling situation, but can also be used by teachers in the classroom. The book consists of a programme of 7 units: Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation, Handwriting, Vocabulary and Word Games. The units each contain a number of linked but separate lessons, with rules, practice exercises and activities. It is also completely adaptable for different abilities, as well as for students with dyslexia. Good literacy skills, as any teacher will tell you, are vital to access the whole curriculum at secondary level, yet time for tuition in written English is often squeezed by the breadth of subject choices and the need to prepare for external exams. 'Winning with Words' provides a remedy for this situation, both for one-off lessons and as a complete programme. As a resource, it focuses on accuracy, as well as offering stimulating ideas for writing practice, so the student can build his or her confidence and learn to 'win with words'.The author taught for many years, both English Language and Literature, at UK secondary school level, up to and including A level. She then went on to study qualifications for teaching dyslexic students and was a Study and Literacy adviser to university students with dyslexia. Most of this book is based on her tried and tested methods and the exercises she devised herself over the course of her career. ITo help learners achieve the required level of literacy in a positive, stimulating way is my goal.
