Synopsis

I just received a communication from a man who used to attend my youth group, when he was a kid over twenty years ago, but the thing that is unusual about him is he was and is a devout Mormon. I don’t think he would mind if I shared a bit of his story. He was raised in the Mormon church, and believed their doctrines pretty strongly, but because of his interactions with the kids in our youth group (mostly Evangelical Christians), he had doubts about whether Mormonism was a set of beliefs he should really trust. He was about 17 or 18 when he came to my house and asked me a very heart-felt and pointed question: Since he was a Mormon—did I think he was “saved”?Having been mostly taught and trained within Evangelical circles, I was kind of put-on-the-spot by this question. On the one hand I truly believe that Jesus is; “the way, the truth, and the life and no one gets to the Father but by” him (Jn 14:6). On the other hand, I had been thoroughly exposed to the source and history of Mormonism, and I was skeptical of its truth. On the other hand, I know many wonderful and sincere Mormon people who believe their doctrines as much or more than this young man. (He was not the only Mormon kid who came to me about this, at this time.). On the other hand, I knew how important this question was to him and to the other Mormons in our youth group, and they looked to me as a source of truth and reassurance. (Yet as an Evangelical I had been taught that Mormonism was truly satanic). So his question about whether he was “saved” was unsettling to me, and I really had to ponder the significance of it, especially with respect to his own spiritual and cultural/familial life. Even though I personally could never agree to the doctrines of Mormonism, I had to weigh this young man’s needs at that moment, and in his immediate future. My reply to him has subsequently been affirmed by other youth group leaders who have had to deal with similar situations, and now, since his message to me this morning—twenty years later—I see the sense of it.When he came to my house, and asked if I thought he was “saved,” I replied, “Who do you think Jesus is?”He answered me, “I think he is the Savior.”I answered him, something like; “Well then, I think you are saved.”My point being, and I expressed this to him: I don’t think God really cares too much about the exact details of your theology, he just wants you to love him in the best way you know how.
