Synopsis

(Up-dated January 2026) Shirley Veronica Bassey was born on 8th January 1937 in Bute Street in Tiger Bay, Butetown, Cardiff, Wales. She was the youngest child of a Nigerian father, Henry Bassey, and an English mother, Eliza Jane Start, and had three sisters, two half-sisters and one brother.

Shirley’s debut single, Burn My Candle, was issued in 1956 ~ however, due to the song’s suggestive lyrics, the single was banned by the BBC. The following year, Shirley’s fourth single ~ her version of the traditional Jamaican folk song, The Banana Boat Song ~ was her first hit, and achieved no.8 in the UK. In February 1959, when her single As I Love You rose to no.1, Shirley became the first Welsh artist ever to achieve a chart topping single in the UK.

Shirley recorded the theme song for three James Bond films, Goldfinger in 1965, Diamonds Are Forever in 1971 and Moonraker in 1979. In 1977 she was the inaugural recipient of a Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist. She became Dame Shirley Bassey in the 2000 New Year’s Honours List, when she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, for her services to the performing arts. Her most recent album, I OWE IT TO YOU ALL, was released in November 2020, and marked her 70th anniversary in the music business.

For the purposes of this book, to qualify as a Top 40 hit, a single, EP or album must have entered the Top 40 chart in at least one of the featured countries. The Top 40 hits are detailed chronologically, according to the date they first entered the chart in one or more of the featured countries. Each Top 40 single, EP and album is illustrated and the catalogue numbers and release dates are detailed for the UK, followed by the chart runs in each country.

The main listings are followed by ‘The Almost Top 40 Singles/Albums’, which gives an honourable mention to singles and albums that peaked between no.41-50 in one or more countries, but which failed to enter the Top 40 in any.
