Synopsis

My mother was first diagnosed with dementia in the summer of 2014. Caring for Emily is a real time diary of what happened between that time and her eventual death in March 2015. It was written almost entirely in the moment. Quite often only minutes after I had visited her and the day's events remained fresh in my mind. It is harrowing, occasionally laugh out loud funny, desperately sad and always honest. I did not know what to expect and when I look back, I realise how little I knew and I wish now that I had known more about dementia and what to do. I could have made my mother's last months more comfortable. I could have saved my own family from some, if not all, of the trauma that followed. Looking back I feel strangely fortunate to have been her carer. We suffered together and the end, when it came, was probably more bearable for us both. I believe books like this are important. They explore the fabric of real life and give guidance to those that follow. If it is sometimes hard to read, that is because life is sometimes hard to bear but love shines through. I love you Mum.
