Synopsis

Panagiotis D. Koutsoukos (1878 – 1968) was a country teacher and passionate antiquarian of his day. The present rare volume is his life’s work: a collection of historical anecdotes, oral traditions and local legends from his native land, Koroni. Through personal research in now destroyed archives and on-site investigations where the traces of past eons were still discernible, he amassed a wealth of stories that often slip through the cracks of history – the stories of everyday people who loved and flourished in the Venetian period of the Peloponnese; suffered under Ottoman rule and took up arms against the tyrant, time and time again, until the revolution of 1821 finally set Greece free. Accounts of miracles, divine visions, 16th century cannibals, ancient artifacts now destroyed and extensive lists of remote places hiding archaeological treasures, make this work an ideal handbook for every traveler in the Peloponnese who wishes to mentally stray off the beaten path and discover the surprising folk tales behind every beach, village, or spring in Koroni and the surrounding areas.
