One day at a time. That's all Brendan can deal with …exams are looming, his dad's dying, and he’s fixing up his grandfather’s old boat - and he knows nothing about sailing!.
Life can’t get any more complicated than that.
Can it?
…and then he met the turtle girl with the odd shoes and endearing balter.
...and his friend from school goes missing ...and the police want to talk to him
Yeah - being a teen is complicated
*“balter” (v.) to dance artlessly, without particular grace or skill but usually with enjoyment.
“I felt like all eyes were on us as we wove our way to the parquetry floor surrounded by carpet and old people. There was about ten others on the dance floor, but we arrived just as one song finished, so we went through the awkward stage of standing there waiting for the new one. Luckily it was upbeat, and I moved arms length from Brooke to give her room and she smiled a dazzling smile as she started to dance, the worst dancing I’d ever seen. She looked like an OCD rabbit, moving frantically this way and that without any consideration for the rhythm of the song. At first, stunned, I looked around to see if anyone was watching. The entire front of the crowd had physically turned the ten or so degrees from watching Elvis to face the little dance floor, where the other dancers had moved to the side, staring, no longer moving to the music. Brooke was oblivious to it, her face changing from sheer pleasure to deadpan concentration as if she was trying to remember the next step, then back to bliss. I wanted to protect her from the shame of it until, in a moment where her head stopped moving side to side, vertically, she looked straight into my eyes and smiled her dimply smile. She was utterly, utterly, beautiful. I dodged her flailing arms and lent in and kissed her, awkwardly at first with my head craning in, but she wrapped her arms around me and kissed me back, still moving to whatever song her body was hearing.”
