Herbert Bruce Low served for 3½ years as a doctor on the Western Front. He was involved in the evacuation and treatment of the wounded from some of the biggest battles of the war, including the Somme and Passchendaele, and was twice decorated for bravery. A civilian in uniform ‘doing his bit’ with endurance and good humour, he wrote home several times a week. His letters, written at all times of the day and night – in Belgian farmhouses and convent schools, in tents and huts, in French chateaux, or at the bottom of deep German-built dugouts – describe not only the medical work during military operations, but also some of the lighter moments during rest periods behind the lines. Illustrated with 11 maps and 43 images and supported by detailed explanatory notes, this is a remarkable day-by-day account of the life of a British military doctor during the First World War.
