Though she has learned to manipulate powerful energies through the White Wizardess of Borea’s wise tutelage, Thistle discovers that plying magic requires not just the ability to use energy, but also a great deal of understanding and control. And Jared learns that music is far more useful and powerful than simply performing for the entertainment of others. Magic:
“The ether is mostly space. Everything is mostly space. So when teleporting, the energy that I am made of moves through the energy of the walls and air without colliding or interacting. I think all things in our world have the same or similar vibrations. It is how we are able to perceive and interact with them. Other planes of existence have fundamentally different vibrations. To move an object through another object, I have to shift the object’s vibrations. I am thus moving it temporarily into another plane of existence.”

What Thistle began to understand was that she could change her own vibrational frequency enough to immerse herself in another world.

Might:
Suddenly, something inside Ge-or seemed to explode. The sight of his friend and companion crumbling on the stone path, with a beast clawing at his form, drove like a fiery bolt into his being. It was as if all the battles and death he had witnessed erupted at once in his chest. Roaring loudly, he raised his sword and charged into the midst of the beasts, whirling like a maelstrom, his blade inflicting wounds at every strike.

Music:
“Barding often comes down to the finer aspects of music. A tune can be as influential as the most powerful potion or spell.”
Warming to playing, Jared let himself flow with the melody… As he drew the tune in on itself, he wove another line into the tenor line, while at the same time inverting another strand of it in another register. This he supported with a slow harmonic progression that he drew from the very roots of the music. He blended the chords expertly with the lines of melody that he now had woven into a seamless flow. Slowly, inexorably, he increased the tension as the music peaked, using the foundation of harmony and added tones to reach a point where there was nothing else to do but suddenly release it all in a cascade, as if he had opened a door to let in a morn's brilliant sunshine.

A sweeping fantasy with intriguing plot twists interwoven in a moving fabric of a sensual and powerful writing style. A tale in the true sense of the word -- fun to read and captivating from one book to the next.
