Synopsis

TRUTH is a hollow concept. After all, what exactly is the truth? What you read in a newspaper, see on the TV, are told by a politician or overhear in the bar of your local pub?Because, unless you know the real facts you will never know what is true and what is propaganda or just plain lies.I have often been called a “conspiracy theorist”. But I am also an award-winning investigative journalist, who over 35 years has worked across all forms of media, including magazines, weekly and daily newspapers, radio broadcasting, books and online. And I was trained into dealing with hard facts, which if necessary could be proved in a court of law.Among more than a dozen awards to my name are North of England Daily Journalist of the Year, Scottish Daily Journalist of the Year, Scottish Weekly Journalist of the Year and a special national award for investigative journalism. In 1994, 53 MPs signed an Early Day Motion in the British House of Commons praising my investigative research and writing. And in 2016, I was awarded an honorary doctorate in written journalism, triggered by my investigations into the real cause of the 2001 Foot and Mouth Disease epidemic.Sometimes the truth is hiding in plain sight. Other times it is hidden under a rock or obscured with lies and propaganda. My career as an investigative journalist was to find the truth, and try to shine a light upon it.Within this book are 18 of my investigations, beginning with the first in 1990 which uncovered the deadly truth about one of our remoted nuclear power stations and ending with unanswered questions about the poisoning of two so-called Russian spies Alexander Litvinenko and Sergei Skripal, researched after I had officially retired as an investigative reporter.Another post-retirement piece is “Coal Dust” a historical investigation into the cover-up and collusion surrounding the Aberfan Disaster of 1966 – an event which happened when I was still at primary school. In between are my reports of nefarious links between Freemasons and the Dunblane Massacre, the real cause of the aforementioned Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, inconsistencies in the evidence over the death of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed, the corruption of the Fourth Estate and my 27 year award-winning investigation into the link between Depleted Uranium (DU) artillery shells and widespread cancers and birth abnormalities. And much more. For me, the key to being a good investigative journalist is having good contacts.Sometimes those contacts wish to remain anonymous for their own safety or wish for privacy, other times they are willing to put their heads above the parapet and tell openly of the lies and deceit that their paymasters are peddling. But without them there would be no truth, and I am constantly indebted to all of my contacts, some of whom have since become firm friends. In 1997, upon being awarded Scottish Daily Journalist of the Year, the judges said my contact book “must be worth well into six figures”.They went on to say: “His targets are institutions, governments and politicians – the “system”, if you like. All his news features set out to inform and change – and they succeeded magnificently. The judges’ minds were “boggled” by his extensive, painstaking research, all undertaken in the public interest.”I hadn’t truly realised until that point just how vital my contacts were to me. I do now!Nic OuttersideMarch 2020
