Synopsis

‘Normal Face’ is the first-person telling of a man that has struggled with Borderline Personality Disorder for all of his adult life. We join him at the beginning of one of his downward trajectories, triggered in part by the anniversary of a tragic event in his life. Having been through this regular cycle of depression many times, he is aware of things he can do to help himself get out of the spiral, but due to the nature of his mental illness he can be his own worst enemy and is constantly battling between decisions to do the right thing in terms of society and morality.Evan believes himself to be an intelligent, good person. But only because he doesn’t know how good or smart anyone else really is, which leads him to the conclusion that he is terrible, and trying to keep a lid on it.As someone with BPD he engages in reckless activities, including those of a sexual nature; he overestimates familiarity in new friendships; and takes minor sleights and inconveniences as huge statements against his value as a human being. I wanted to write something so that other sufferers might be able to point to it to explain to people “that’s what it feels like”.
