Synopsis

The Eyo festival is the most spectacular cultural fiesta held in Southwest Nigeria. Originating in 19th century Lagos in a fishing village on the lagoon end of the now Glover Road, Ikoyi, it is a festival that is known for its pomp, pageantry, dancing masquerades, and gaiety. It is famously known as the Adimu Orisa Play.

The early Eyo masquerade festivals were devoid of lavish celebrations. Three hundred years later, social and developmental changes have evolved. The Adimu Orisa Play has now become a full-blown ceremony with adjustments made to allow this exciting festival of masquerades to fit in seamlessly with the modern era of the 21st century. Today, festivities come with splendid theatrical displays of colourful costumes, regalia, music, acrobatics, and traditional dancing.

Despite being deeply rooted in tradition, the cultural festival was originally a traditional event held in honour of departed Obas and high profile personalities of Lagos Island. But the 21st century has brought on a new change. The event is now categorised as a tourist attraction and revenue generator for Lagos State, Nigeria.
