What is “Lutheran Apologetics?”The purpose of Christian apologetics is to make a defense of the tenets of the Christian faith by using rational, historical, logical arguments to demonstrate the truth of Christianity. Historically, the Lutheran Church held a fideist position when it came to the issue of Apologetics. Rather than seeking to defend the faith, we were taught to simply preach the Gospel, and the Gospel will prove itself. There is truth to this statement. No one becomes a Christian by simply being convinced by rational and historical arguments that the truth claims of Christianity are in fact true. Yet, there are pre-conditions that must be met before one will even hear the Gospel. Obviously, they must understand the language in which the Gospel is being proclaimed. Also, if one does not believe in the existence of God, the truth of the Bible, the human sinful condition, and the historicity of the person of Jesus Christ, the Gospel will fall on deaf ears and become the object of scorn and ridicule. It is also true that we are living in a different age. Perhaps in the age of reason it was feared that the rationalist would answer any argumentation of a Christian with effective reasonable responses. But we are now in the age of postmodernism in which truth is relative, and all religious truth claims are on equal footing. In such an age, it does behoove the Christian to be able to demonstrate the factual historicity of the saving acts of God in Christ Jesus as opposed to the truth claims of other religions, sects and cults. The purpose of Lutheran Apologetics is not to produce faith but to remove the obstacles to faith. In addition to dealing with “natural” and “Christian apologetics,” I have chosen to deal with the claims of the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the heresy of premillennialism. The final three chapters defends the claims of Lutheran theology in opposition to Roman Catholic, Reformed and Arminian theology. I have also included an essay I presented at a District pastor’s conference twenty-five years ago titled “Apologetics in a Postmodern Age.” The illustrations may be dated but the principles remain.
