Synopsis

Carl Gustav Jung was the founder of analytical psychology, the name chosen to differentiate himself from his former mentor, Freud’s, psychoanalysis. Jung’s writing extends over 20 volumes of complex material termed The Collected Works, supplemented by seminars and lectures that were later published. In 2009, 48 years after Jung’s death, the Red Book was published, detailing the profound encounter with the unconscious psyche that provided the foundation for his work and led him into long forgotten territory of alchemy, myth, and world religion from its earliest origins.

Reflective works centred on Jung have been published before. Jung’s most able students Marie Von Franz and Barbara Hannah have written about his work, and other Jungian analysts have felt moved to do the same. My particular line of insight comes in having moderated the r/Jung online community since 2019, now the largest such community in the world with over a quarter million members from around the world. This role has given a good feel for key themes of interest and knowledge gaps. Jung's work has also taken me back to a Christianity I had lost touch with and the reader may find something of value in my reflections on this journey.

My hope is that the novel use of the theatre as a means of structuring Jung’s work adds something beyond the excellent publications already available, and in this role it is seen as a supplement or natural growth rather than a competitor.
