A Piano Course For Adult Beginners introducing simple exercises and explanations of basic technique to help the adult learner develop good habits from the outset. The emphasis is on learning a lot about playing the piano without having to recognise too many notes at the same time. Trying to learn too many notes at once is often the greatest obstacle to progress for the adult and can destroy confidence very early on. In this book the writer has tried to continuously build the learner's confidence. "Let's Begin" progresses through a series of five finger hand positions, such as the "F position" on page 24 with the introduction of B flat; and the "E minor position" on page 33, introducing "F sharp" and "D sharp". Note learning progresses by adding just one new note in each hand with each new change of position, Each hand position contains progressive exercises and tuneful pieces, such as "Lullaby" on page 23, "A Sleepy Afternoon" on page 29 and the slightly more advanced "Clockwork Doll" on page 40, and "The Lonely Farm" on page 41. Each of these pieces makes use of the previous technical exercises of Legato and Staccato and Chords. Each section is rounded off with a duet, which the learner can play with the teacher or a more experienced friend. These have proven extremely popular. When the adult learner plays "First Duet" on page 26 for the for the first time the sense of achievement is always commented upon. All five duets are popular with adults and help to develop listening skills that are difficult for the new pianist to develop on their own. The book has been used successfully over a number of years with the composer's pupils achieving a great deal of success. Students are able to read music quite well by the end of the first book. A recent student persuaded the author to publish it so that other potential adult beginners would have the opportunity to learn with this engaging and stimulating material. The new beginner feels very quickly that they are playing real pieces that sound nice, which in turn encourages the adult to practice with resulting progress. The author's helpful technical suggestions at the beginning of the book and throughout also enable the learner to overcome potential problems.
