The 100 Day Project is an annual online challenge that thousands of people participate in through instagram. The idea is simple: pick an action and repeat that action every day for 100 days. It can be simple or ambitious; artistic or not. The hope is that you will learn and grow from the repeated action day after day.The layered gelatin prints in this book are the result of Julie Fei-Fan Balzer’s 2020 100 Day Project: 100 Days of Gelatin Printing.Gelatin printing is a printmaking process done without the assistance of a press. A gelatin plate is a squishy surface onto which paint (and sometimes other mediums) is applied. The artist can then use stencils, texture tools, household objects, leaves, and more, to create patterns or designs in the paint on the plate. Paper (or fabric) can then be pressed to the plate to lift the monoprint.Julie’s personal interest is in creating multi-layered monoprints. Using a system of registration she builds up layers of texture and color by printing over and over on the same piece of paper. It’s a labor intensive process, but one that she enjoys.Every single layered monoprint in this book was created with thought and care. They are arranged in roughly the order they were created.
