Our community-based project tried to raise awareness about the invisible lines drawn between Métis and non-Indigenous Peoples in St. Paul, Alberta. To understand these divisions, the project also examined government and Catholic colonization policies in the founding of the St. Paul des Métis Half-breed Reserve. Our research project hoped to give voice to Métis perspectives on their own history in St. Paul, and how that story should be passed on. By sharing Métis’ perspectives, we wanted to honour Métis people and foster pride in their history by all community members. Our approach focused on bringing people into relationships and dialogue, where they would gain awareness about the colonization of Métis People in their community and collectively engage in self-reflection. Upon acknowledging the truth, we hoped the community could start social change through healing, forgiving, and celebrating each other.
