Synopsis

30 BLACK HISTORY ICONS: 500 Years of Global Black Influencers - UK, USA, Europe, the Caribbean, and India is aimed at parents and teachers who would like solid historical content to teach their children, and to exercise the historical skills required by the National Curriculum. The material is designed for children at Key Stage 3 Level (young people aged 11 to 14). The lessons can work with slightly older or younger people. We, for example, have profitably used this material with adults. The book is subtitled 30 Hours of Teaching and Learning Material for Parents and Teachers of Secondary School Students. The classes follow chronologically from 1518 to 2020. The thirty icons selected were Black people, who despite slavery, colonialism, and Jim Crow legislation, achieved greatness. The men and women discussed here were architects, businesspeople, classical scholars, composers, fine artists, intellectuals, journalists, mathematicians, poets, soldiers, and university professors. We chose individuals of a cultural and intellectual calibre who would do honour to the heritage of any people. Many of the icons that appear in this book have appeared on stamps, even coins. Some have had parks named after them. Some of their mansions have been preserved. But no one is talking about this heritage … except us. To our knowledge, no other book aimed at schoolchildren carries this empowering content.
