Synopsis

GLIMPSES OF WAR Volume 1 COVID inspired book of war time memories in aid of a major charity ‘Highly recommended... from across the different wars of the 20th century comes this unique collection of inspirational narratives of human endurance, daring exploits, fighting spirit and sheer heroism.’ Dr Helen Fry, author, historian and broadcaster ‘What a marvellous time — during the many privations of ‘lockdown’ — to ask us all to turn out our family archives and contribute to the BMMHS’s first publication. And no better charity than Blind Veterans UK to receive any profit from this great initiative.’ Major General Dair Farrar-Hockley MC Inspired by the first COVID lockdown, Glimpses of War describes personal experiences of wartime of the last 100 years. Stories of great valour and heroism, of tragedy and sorrow, of hardship and stoicism as well as ordinary people ‘just doing their bit’. The British Modern Military History Society has captured many aspects of war from many perspectives. People living through the Blitz, soldiers fighting on the Western Front in the trenches, 2 brothers fighting in Normandy after D Day, soldiers surviving the horrors of the Japanese POW camps, and a nurse serving on HMHS Uganda during the Falklands War.Glimpses of War, in the personal words of those who lived through these times or from their family members or historians, portrays a whole range of emotions with many moving stories of wartime. With all profits going to the charity Blind Veterans UK (formerly St Dunstan's), the British Modern Military History Society has compiled a superb book (the first of three) which will be a valuable addition to anyone’s bookshelf. www.bmmhs.org/glimpses-of-war
