Tracing My Mother’s Roots in Nuevo León is the third book of my trilogy about my mother’s (Noemí Raquel Rodríguez) ancestors. It traces the genealogy of several of her great-grandparents’ ancestors. Her great-grandparents Tomás Rodríguez, Anacleto Chapa, Jacoba Ortiz, Vicente Salazar, and Dionisio Lerma lived in San Ygnacio, Texas. However, they had roots in Nuevo León.The Guerra Cañamar, De la Garza, Cavazos, and García Sepúlveda families were Tomás Rodríguez’s ancestors. The Chapa, Buentello, and Solís families were Anacleto Chapa’s. The Benavides and Gutiérrez families were Jacoba Ortiz’s. Most of these families arrived in Nuevo León in the 1600s. Many of them intermarried with even older families, those in Nuevo León since the late 1500s. As Spaniards and criollos and members of the founding families, they dominated every aspect of life. They held government positions, joined the military and clergy, and became prosperous businessmen and landowners.Vicente Salazar and Dionisio Lerma’s ancestors belonged to the laboring class of Sabinas Hidalgo. Sabinas was founded when silver was discovered in its hills in 1692-93. Three types of haciendas developed in the area. One type processed precious metals. The other two produced crops and livestock. The castas (mulattoes and mestizos) and the Indians from the congregas labored on all three haciendas. They also toiled in the mines, factories (obrajes), and the homes of the elite. They formed the backbone of every workforce.In this book, you will come face to face with my mother’s ancestors, some of whom will be your own. You will learn their names, genealogy, and part of their history. You will also discover their triumphs, downfalls, strengths, and flaws. Hopefully, as we make sense of their lives from a bygone era molded by unique circumstances, we can live better lives ourselves.
