About the author

With my twenty years’ experience of rehabilitating athletes in my clinic, I didn't think that one day I would have to apply that knowledge to rehabilitate myself back to some sort of mobility. My experience of working with professional rugby league players, footballers and the public allowed me to tap into and see the strength and courage of some amazing personalities. In the book I include the sadness, but also the humour of this journey, that can be seen through the many stories that I recall about my time and adventures within the sporting world of rugby, football, Formula 1 and superbikes. I also write about my love and passion for my own sport and my sporting journey as a competitive bodybuilder, and later a powerlifter.

"On the 2nd of April 2016 my whole world was turned upside down in a negative way or so I thought! The journey I was then given was painful, scary, lonely, challenging, depressing, exhausting, both physically and mentally, confusing, torturous, numbing, embarrassing, self-doubting and there was a huge feeling of being a burden with no self-worth or purpose. A deep, deep feeling that your soul was dead or dying with no desire to live. But the universe had other plans for me. As I eventually came to realise that the universe did this for me, not to me, my life slowly started to change.

The universe also guided me back to my passion of being in the gym which I had been ignoring for a number of years. I also found the guidance and strength to find my inner soul so many of us ignore so we can do what others want us to do or fit into the boxes that we think we should be in.

My car accident changed all that now being classed as 80% disabled, meant both I and society no longer had a box for me to fit into. The result being you are left out in the cold, blinded and disorientated, confused and lost. It doesn't take people long before they turn and look the other way. You are then left alone with your pain, disabilities, thoughts, anger, disappointment and fear. Life becomes very dark, lonely and cruel. One disaster after another keeps knocking you down, but I came to realise that the important thing was not how hard or how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get up again and face the challenge that knocked you down. It's that which gives you strength to carry on!"
