Synopsis

After a hugely successful period of early retirement in the wilds of inland Andalucia, Chrissie and John have suddenly encountered problems, of a financial nature, having their Spanish bank account frozen, amid allegations of money-laundering. Added to this, returning home after a wonderful tour of the Westcountry, they stumble upon a mugging, a break-in and a robbery, none of them especially serious, although it is no wonder John in particular questions whether he still wishes to remain in Spain.

It is not all doom and gloom,however. After a Fifty Shades of Grey moment, we discover the pitfalls of lying to a Spanish insurance company, and driving without benefit of tax or MOT. On a show-business note, Jonathan Ross makes an appearance next door, and we are introduced to the Spanish version of The Waltons. There is even a love affair, from the most unexpected of quarters.

Meanwhile, we learn that buying a dolly is not as simple as it seems, how a photo of a tiger provokes a huge row in the library about General Franco, and that ordering vegetarian food in a local restaurant does not necessarily guarantee the absence of meat. Local wildlife, of an airborne nature, puts in an appearance, and the Great Western Railway announce plans for a branch line to Santa Marta.

Conflict is never that far away, however, as an unruly family move into the street, John almost starts a brawl in a filling station and Chrissie tackles three burly Spaniards in a bar. John is also forced to explain his 'accidental' foray in a local brothel.

Finally, as the world descends inexorably into a global pandemic, the loss of two close friends causes our couple to reassess their priorities, and Chrissie herself writes the epilogue in a stunning denouement, explaining, perhaps, the long delay in the publication of this work. ,
