Synopsis

Writing a UCAS Personal Statement is an experience that students often find difficult and daunting and it certainly can be tricky. Trying to explain, in only 4000 characters, why the university of your dreams should offer you a place is no easy feat. However, it is by no means impossible, and with planning, time and effort, all students are capable of writing successful personal statements.

This guide is based on the premise that while there are no absolutely ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ ways to go about writing your UCAS personal statement, there are processes that tend to be effective and which, if followed, will make the experience easier and your statement better. This guide is very much written with these processes in mind.

Starting with a consideration of what universities are looking for and what the purpose of the personal statement is, the guide then moves on to the part of the process that most students find trickiest; getting started! In this section, the guide provides some useful tips and tricks that will help you move on from simply staring at a blank page, and then will talk you through an early audit of your statement, as well as outlining possible structures for your first draft.

Though most students will find starting their statement difficult, many end up facing the opposite problem later on: a statement of far more than 4000 characters. The next section of the guide deals with this and sets out how to make the most of your 4000 characters, and how to refine and edit your statement.

While personal statements for different degree courses have far more similarities than differences, personal statements for certain courses do require a particular approach and the guide includes specific recommendations for students applying to Oxbridge and Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science, as well as for those applying for dual-honours degrees.

In the second half of the book, you will find subject specific exemplar statements. These are genuine and unedited personal statements written by successful applicants in recent years and are presented alongside an analysis of the statement so that you understand what makes an outstanding statement and how to write your own. Throughout the guide there are over twenty exemplar statements including:

  • Art
  • Architecture
  • Biology
  • Classics
  • Computer Science
  • Earth Sciences
  • Economics and Management
  • English and Creative Writing
  • Geography
  • History and Politics
  • International Relations and Politics
  • Law
  • Medicine
  • Modern Languages
  • Physics/Natural Sciences
  • Psychology

Easy to follow yet comprehensive, Successful Personal Statements will help you to write the strongest possible statement whilst finding the experience (relatively!) pain-free.
