Synopsis

I wrote this collection of poetry between May 2020 and October 2021. It is largely based on my experiences while caring for my Mother over the last 7 years, and after I moved back into the family home in September 2014, having recognised my Mother was beginning to forget things and how to do simple daily tasks.

I became my Mother's full-time carer in June 2016, following her diagnosis for Vascular Dementia in May 2015, and a second assessment less than a year later, which showed her memory and cognitive ability to be able to think, reason and consider everyday things, had deteriorated by 25%. With my Mother's mind and memories continuing to fade and as she gradually loses the battle to stay in the same reality as me, moving from mid-to-late term vascular Dementia, I felt I had to try and express how caring for my Mother and I imagine other loved ones, feels. I was also inspired by members of the Alzheimer’s Society and Carers in Bedfordshire support group I attended with my Mother.

Every poem in this collection has been inspired by something that has happened to me and/or my Mother, or by seeing how people who suffer with Dementia, are treated by others.

Caring for your loved one is not easy. No one becomes a carer for a loved one out of choice but purely because of love. There is little recognition, reward, or respite in caring for your loved one. I therefore hope that by reading my poems, if you are a carer, you may appreciate there is support for you, especially from other carers, for how you may have been feeling about yourself and your own situation, whether past or present.

There are carers groups everywhere with volunteers and trained staff all willing to help you, the carer. Equally, the Alzheimer's Society, as well as other charitable Dementia organisations offer a wide range of help and support for anyone who may be suffering from any form or stage of Dementia, as well as their family and carers.
