Synopsis

In the mid nineteenth century, Ireland is a tense and unequal society. Although Ireland is an integral part of the United Kingdom, a large force of police and army occupy the country.
Rebel groups and secret societies known as Ribbonmen exist in many parts, but in the district of Skibbereen, west Cork, one such group enjoys a fearsome reputation. They are known locally as the Headless Hound gang, on account of the manner in which they butchered a valuable pack of fox hounds. Tax collectors and land agents live in fear for their lives and will only carry out their duties with a police escort.
The arrival of a new landowner sparks unease in the district. Sir Richard Ewart is about to take possession of over 10,000 acres. He comes from a tough military background, and has the reputation of being a duellist. He brings in a tumble gang to demolish the hundreds of cottages and hovels that dot his estate, and in so doing sets the scene for a vicious agrarian war.
Young Thomas Dix, is recruited into the gang after his family is evicted from their farm. Before long he finds himself caught up in a campaign of aggression against the English landowners. The violence escalates to murder and, as the body count rises, the police devote all their resources into tracking down the gang. Thomas tries desperately to keep his family alive.
The Great Famine of 1847 unfolds with devastating consequences. Thomas loses his family to the onslaught and soon finds himself alone in the world, and the only remaining gang member still at large. He sets about waging a one-man war against his nemesis, Sir Richard. It is a war he knows he cannot win, but he remains determined to survive the holocaust, no matter what.
