Synopsis

(Up-dated January 2026) Marvin Pentz Gay was born on 2nd April 1939 in Washington, D.C.. After he was discharged from the United States Air Force, Marvin and his friends formed a vocal quartet, The Marquees, who released one single before he became a member of Harvey & The Moonglows.

When he signed with Motown in early 1961, Marvin added an ‘e’ to his surname, and he released his debut solo single Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide in May 1961. He went on to score three no.1 singles in the United States with I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Let’s Get It On and Got To Give It Up (Pt.1).

Marvin’s first post-Motown single, Sexual Healing, netted him two Grammy Awards, and as recently as 2020 Rolling Stone magazine ranked Marvin’s 1971 album WHAT’S GOING ON at no.1 on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time listing.

Tragically, Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his own father on 1st April 1984 ~ the day before his 45th birthday.

For the purposes of this book, to qualify as a Top 40 hit, a single or album must have entered the Top 40 chart in at least one of the featured countries. The Top 40 hits are detailed chronologically, according to the date they first entered the chart in one or more of the featured countries. Each Top 40 single and album is illustrated and the catalogue numbers and release dates are detailed for the USA and the UK, followed by the chart runs in each country.

The main listings are followed by ‘The Almost Top 40 Singles/Albums’, which gives an honourable mention to singles that peaked between no.41-50 in one or more countries, but which failed to enter the Top 40 in any. There is also a points-based list of the Top 30 singles and Top 10 albums, plus a fascinating Trivia section, which looks at the most successful singles and albums and in each of the featured countries.
