Synopsis

Woodfords' "Defense of Freemasonry" is a refutation of several attacks on the Freemasons during the mid 19th century, most notably (in the British sense at least) claims that Masons were sworn to oaths which were unlawful. A few parts of the work are essentially an appeal to emotion, and ruminate theatrically on all the charitable workings of the movement, simultaneously praising Christendom at large, and expounding upon the sometimes hypocritical excesses of Catholicism towards secret societies.
