A few days before Bill McGlashan surrendered to serve a three-month sentence at the federal prison camp in Tucson, Arizona, he had a telephone conversation with Michael Santos. Although about the same age, Bill and Michael came from different backgrounds.

Bill McGlashan earned his undergraduate degree from Yale and his graduate degree from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He built a distinguished career in business and as a professional investor before joining TPG Capital, in 2004. He served as chairman of several corporate and philanthropic boards, including Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, XOJET, Creative Artists Agency, and others.

While at TPG, along with Bono and Jeff Skoll, Bill founded The Rise Fund, with more than $2 billion from sophisticated investors that pledged to make a social impact. Over the course of his career, investors have trusted Bill to oversee assets valued at more than $12 billion.

While Bill built his extraordinary career, Michael Santos spent 9,500 days in federal prisons of every security level. During the quarter century that he lived as federal prisoner 16377-004, Michael worked to reconcile with society. He earned an undergraduate and a graduate degree. He authored books to help people learn more about America’s prison system, offering suggestions on steps our nation could take to improve outcomes for people that went through the system.

Upon his release from prison, in 2013, Michael began collaborating with others to build a series of ventures like Prison Professors. It was in the context of that work that opened an opportunity for Michael to work with Bill and learn from him.

Despite having devoted his professional career to creating solutions in response to huge global challenges such as climate change, extreme poverty, access to healthcare, and access to education, Bill made a catastrophic decision as a parent. He agreed to participate in a ruse. A conman convinced him to pay an unscrupulous testing service to assist prospects for his son’s admission to a university. His son didn’t need the help, and he didn’t know that Bill had participated in the artifice.

Bill’s decision led to a series of catastrophic events, proving the theorem of Scottish author Sir Walter Scott, who wrote: “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”

Authorities arrested Bill, a grand jury indicted him, and he pleaded guilty to a federal crime. The infamous “Varsity Blues” case scandalized his reputation, with a barrage of news coverage that focused on his bad decision—burying news of all the good works that he had done around the world.

Days before Bill surrendered to serve a three-month sentence at the federal prison camp in Tucson, he and Michael shared a conversation. Bill wanted to help more people in prison lead lives of meaning, relevance, and dignity. That conversation led he and Michael to spend hundreds of hours in collaboration to create this course. Regardless of what educational resources a prison may or may not offer, participants can learn through this self-directed project.

Through the course, Michael interviews Bill to learn more about his “big” life and how he prepared for leadership.

Bill’s responses to the questions that Michael asked offer numerous lessons for any person that wants to overcome the challenges of confinement. Each lesson includes a series of questions to help people develop critical-thinking skills, vocabulary, and writing skills. This self-directed course will help participants learn the importance of making values-based, goal-oriented decisions. It is a great starter course for any person that wants to work toward self-improvement while serving a jail or prison sentence.
