Alain and Geraldine were great hosts and owners at our favorite restaurant, and Mustapha was the superb maitre d' there. All went well, sometimes. But then some people would wander in like stray dogs or lost lambs. Some were definitely fish out of water. They spoke no French. Mustapha accommodated them as best he could, using sign language and intuition. But sometimes there came that moment when he would look over at us with that look in his eye, a look that said so graciously, “Would you please translate?”

That restaurant was in Arles, the city where we were staying in Provence. The real clientele of the restaurant was the local people who wanted a great place to eat at a reasonable price with a fine ambience, no English required.

But then there were those lost souls who could hardly say hello in French. Often lost not just geographically or linguistically, but in spirit or purpose. They spoke no French, and Mustapha would recruit our help. We usually did it gladly. He and the owners had been so good to us and had made our stay in Arles so much more pleasurable.

But some nights we didn’t know what we were getting in for. Sometimes it involved a lot more than help with the French menu. They latched on to us and grabbed a chance to speak English. They told all that they were going through and how it started. Had we been time-transported into the Arabian Nights Tales? Were we riding to Chaucer’s Canterbury? Yet some were so in need, or even in pain, or so humorous and interesting that we sat and listened. Humans must be the funniest species on the planet, and the most fascinating, too!
