About Vanity Fair
“The wicked are wicked, no doubt, and they go astray and they fall, and they come by their deserts; but who can tell the mischief which the very virtuous do?”
Published in 1848, Vanity Fair is a regency era novel by English author William Makepeace Thackeray, following the adventures of social climber Becky Sharp and the sweet but naïve Amelia Sedley. The novel takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan’s 17th-century allegory Pilgrim’s Progress.
A brilliantly satirical work of epic scope, we can’t help but be engaged by the alluring and ruthless Becky, with Thackeray providing a clever counterpoint in the person of her demure, unworldly friend. Their fate of these two very different heroines is the subject of this ripping yarn, in his definitive literary masterpiece.
