Upon learning that he has a short time to live, a lonely, retired university professor embarks on a long journey, determined to pay a final visit to the young woman whose act of befriending him changed his life. Along the way, he observes many people and places, gains new insights, and weaves them all into his story. The result is a poignant meditation on life, death, regrets over missed opportunities, remaining true to one's self in a hostile world, and most important, the meaning of friendship; in sum, a work of fiction which, though short in length, offers considerable food for thought.
John Omwake is also author of Limestone County, Rankin Creek, Ambience, and, most recently, The Education of Neelyrose Waller.
