Parker Bishop Albee, Jr. is a native New Englander, a graduate of Dartmouth College, and received his PhD in History from Duke University. He is Professor Emeritus from the University of Southern Maine where he enjoyed a rewarding 47-year teaching career. He has co-authored two books on the Iwo Jima flag raising with Keller Cushing Freeman: Shadow of Suribachi (Praeger) and Iwo Jima Icon (Palmetto Publishing). Among his other publications is the award-winning book, Letters From Sea 1882-1901 (Tilbury House). In retirement from teaching he enjoys an active researching and writing career.
Keller Cushing Freeman received her PhD in History as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow from the University of Georgia. A native of Asheville, NC, Freeman has lived in Greenville, SC since 1964, teaching history and philosophy at Furman and Clemson Universities, at Greenville Technical College, and in the University of South Carolina's Master of Fine Arts program at the Greenville Museum of Art. With co-author Parker Bishop Albee, Jr. she has written two books: Shadow of Suribachi and Iwo Jima Icon. Freeman and Albee served as script consultants and commentators for the A&E television documentary, "Heroes of Iwo Jima," premiering on the A&E Television Network.In retirement from her academic career, Freeman continues to write both fiction and non-fiction; to edit; and to collaborate with regional musicians as a librettist.

The text follows the career of this son of Russian immigrants from his childhood in Washington, DC, to his years as an apprentice photojournalist in San Francisco. Despite being classified 4-F (because of poor eyesight), Rosenthal managed to work his way through five island invasions in World War II's Pacific campaign, ending up on a cold February day in 1945 at the summit of Iwo Jima's Mt. Suribachi, where the Marines raised two American flags. The book describes his unexpectedly coming upon the second flag raising and relates the first-ever detailed, comprehensive account in which Rosenthal explains his thought process and preparations for taking his photograph. This book does not leave its readers there, at Rosenthal's pinnacle of professional achievement. The authors, through their friendship with Rosenthal, found themselves in possession of a second story: one that stretched decades beyond the events of 1945 and the scope of their first book on the Iwo Jima story, Shadow of Suribachi.
