We offer to the English reader the first collection of translated articles on science by Torahiko Terada (1878-1935), Japanese physicist, literate, and artist. Poliedric and original thinker, disciple of Natsume Sōseki, his life and career were guided by an unconstrained curiosity toward the character of natural phenomena, a strenuous cultivation of their appreciation, and a deep concern for a scientific education that is aware of its human value. The articles collected here range in topic from the nature of scientific knowledge to its relations to literature and the arts, from the role played by our senses in physics to the educative potential of physical phenomena in everyday life.
