Synopsis

Once there were four realms, and a season for each, perpetual and unchanging. The fall veteran Commander Lord Versos lives in pain and regret at the Traveling Court of his realm. For as long as the bards of his homeland can remember, his warrior culture had been locked in combat with the spring empire of Vesna until a sudden armistice forced this once-mighty warrior into uneasy retirement. But when a mysterious messenger brings word that an impossible, vast monster is ravaging his old foes, Lord Versos rides out to investigate—and embarks on the last great adventure of his military career.

A wish is not the same as a plan. Eager to vanquish the still undefeated Dragon in the Vesna Empire, Lord Versos plans to cross the sea and return home to raise an army. Or, he could conquer the Empire for the Fallen Princess and place her on the throne. Whatever his plan, it evaporates in the blistering heat of the Summer Isles, where a power struggle escalates between the Raja and the dancing monks of their bloodthirsty god. Brought against his will, the Commander finds himself helping two unlikely lovers, a taciturn Hinterfrosten pirate and the Sumnayan princess beloved by her people, to prevent the next sacrifice. In order to foment an uprising, he may have to defeat a god.
