Synopsis

The city of Liverpool was such; a melding of nationalities and ambition, religions and dreams, greed and corruption stirred and spiced to feed the growing appetites of the people.
Into the melting pot is born a dreamer. A dreamer of times past and the future. Paddy Donaghue is born in 1911, as the ‘Great Unrest’ of strikes and protest unsettles a nation. As he grows he watches as the city’s history unfolds, his uncle prosper and his own family flounder on misfortune.
Two sisters, Bridie and Mary, arrived in Liverpool with their husbands from Dublin in those early years of the 20th century. The local dish that is served up to each of their families is flavoured differently, one is seasoned to taste; the other rank, salty and unpalatable.
Mary O’Brien’s husband Peter is fortunate and is introduced to the Knights of St Columba. The shadowy network of entrepreneurs, officials and local politicians helps the family to flourish as the city grows.
On the other hand the Bridie’s family are beset by ill fortune. Her husband Joe dies in the war fighting for a King and country he despises. Widowed, she makes the difficult but necessary decision to abandon her children and remarry. It then falls on her daughter Shelagh and eldest son, Paddy, crippled by polio to support the rest of her family. This brings them into a shadowy underworld of criminal Liverpool.
A Dance Upon the Level Shore is the story of these two families; the O’Briens and the Donoghues; of love and loss, of intrigue and violence, of loyalty and betrayal and ultimately hope, as they survive the bleak storms of Liverpool’s politics and old allegiances in pre-war Britain.
